Getting There

Driving Directions:

From Lynchburg via US 29 & 460:
From Route 29, take the 460 West Exit towards Roanoke. Go about 19 miles. When you get to Bedford, take the second Bedford Exit. There will be signs for the National D-Day Memorial and the Bedford Visitors Center exit. Come off the exit and take a right onto 122 South (Burks Hills Road). There will be an Exxon Station on the right and the Bedford Visitors Center will be across the street on the left.

From Roanoke via I-581:
Off Interstate 581, take the 460 East (Orange Avenue) Exit. Follow 460 East approximately 28 miles. Take the 2nd Bedford Exit (Route 122) which is marked with signage for The National D-Day Memorial and the Bedford Visitors Center. Come off the exit and take a left onto Route 122 South (Burks Hill Road). There will be an Exxon Station on the right and the Bedford Visitors Center will be across the street on the left.

From Roanoke via I-81:
From Interstate 81 take the Troutville Exit (#150), to Alternate 220; follow signs to 460 (Lynchburg and Bedford) and take a left onto 460 East. Go approximately 25 minutes. When you get to Bedford follow the signs for The National D-Day Memorial and the Bedford Visitors Center exit (Route 122). Take a left off of the exit and an Exxon Station will be on the right and the Bedford Visitors Center will be across the street on the left.

From Richmond via US 360:
Take 360 West to 460 West; follow signs to Lynchburg and Bedford. Take the 2nd Bedford Exit. Take a right off of the exit onto Route 122 South (Burks Hill Road). This exit will be marked with signage for the National D-Day Memorial and the Bedford Visitors Center. There will be an Exxon Station on your right and the Bedford Visitors Center will be across the street on the left.

From Richmond via I-64:
Take 64 West to Interstate 81 South; take the Troutville Exit (#150), to Alternate 220; Follow signs to 460 (Lynchburg and Bedford) and take a left onto 460 East. Travel approximately 25 minutes and take the 122 exit. Take a left off of the exit and an Exxon Station will be on your right and the Bedford Visitors Center will be across the street on the left.

From North Carolina via I-77
Take Interstate 77 into Virginia to Interstate 81. Take the Interstate 81 North/US-11 North exit, (exit number 32) towards Roanoke. Merge onto Interstate 81 North. You will pass Pulaski, Radford, Blacksburg, Salem and Roanoke. Take the Troutville Exit #150 (to Alt 220) ramp. Go right onto Alternate 220, go through the stoplight and continue 6+ miles to the second stoplight at US 221 & 460. Go left (East) at the light onto 460/221 for about 20+ miles. Take the second Bedford Exit (Route 122). Take left onto Rt. 122 (Burks Hills Road). Cross over 460 and an Exxon Station will be on your right. Across from the Exxon station is the Bedford Visitors Center.

From North Carolina via Route 29
Take US 29 North towards Lynchburg, VA. Merge onto VA-86 Truck N. Stay straight to go onto US-29BR N/US-29 Truck N/VA-86 N. Continue to follow US 29 BR N. You pass Blairs, and take the US-29 North exit toward Chatham/Lynchburg. US-29 North becomes US-29 Business Route North. Merge onto US-29 North. Merge onto US-460 West and drive for about 20 miles. There will be signs for The National D-Day Memorial and the Bedford Visitors Center exit. Come down off the exit and take a right onto 122 South (Burks Hill Road). There will be an Exxon Station on the right and the Bedford Visitors Center will be across the street on the left.

OR - Take US 29 North towards Lynchburg. Merge onto VA-86 Truck N. Stay straight to go onto US-29BR N/US-29 Truck N/VA-86N. Continue to follow US 29 BR N. You pass Blairs and take the US-29 North exit toward Chatham/Lynchburg. About 10 miles pass Gretna you can take Route 43 West towards Bedford. Route 43 runs into Centertown Bedford. At the stoplight at 43 and Washington Street take a left and go to the next stoplight at Washington and Crenshaw. Take a left onto Crenshaw which turns into Burks Hill Road. Take a right at the Bedford Elementary School sign and follow the road around to the left to the Bedford Visitors Center. NOTE: ROUTE 43 IS A WINDING TWO LANE ROAD.

  • May 17 - Restoration Talk and Tour - 3:00pm to 4:00pm - In honor of National Historic Preservation month, Director of Restoration Travis McDonald will present a slide talk and tour explaining why Jefferson's design of his retreat, Poplar Forest, was a radically modern work of architecture in America for its time. Jefferson's work was a "melting pot" of architectural prototypes but also very personal. The current restoration work on the wing of service rooms is one of the most Jeffersonian parts of the architecture and one that was innovative and unusual in American architecture.   • May 24 - Moonlight Serenade - 7:00pm - See the Memorial at dusk on this special Memorial Day weekend. The Jefferson Choral Society will perform an evening concert of 1940s music from 8:00pm to 9:00pm. Performer Keith Campbell will kick off the concert at 7pm.   • May 31 - 3rd Annual BBQ at Sedalia - Barbeque connoisseurs will gather at the 3rd annual BBQ festival to celebrate the art and secrets of slow-cooked pork barbeque. Tastin' starts at High noon! BBQ Teams will likely begin cooking Friday night and continue into the early hours of Saturday morning.
