This dual exhibit features 2-D and 3-D multimedia artworks as well as a retrospective of a highly respected local artist. James Underwood, originally from Floyd County, has been painting full time for the past 20 years, since his retirement. Jun 6 - 69th Anniversary of D-Day - 11:00am - Spend the 69th anniversary of D-Day at the National D-Day Memorial where valor, fidelity, and sacrifice are honored throughout the year. Pay tribute to those soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in Normandy 69 years ago and honor those veterans who lived to fight another day. There will be a ceremony at the National D-Day Memorial including special music and speakers. Tours will be provided throughout the day. Jun 15 - 10th Annual World War II in Miniature Display and Flag Day Event - 10:00am to 5:00pm - On this Father’s Day weekend, treat dad to a one-of-a-kind exhibit featuring miniature World War II model planes, tanks, ships, jeeps, historic figures, and more. Sponsored by the Roanoke Valley International Plastic Modelers Society, the event includes over 100 models on display and special activities for children. Tours of the Memorial are available throughout the day. Jun 15 - Lenny Marcus Trio Concert - 7:30pm - Lenny Marcus hails from Wash, DC, beginning his jazz career studying with Ray Bryant, then moving to New Orleans where he worked for many years, studying with legends Ellis Marsalis & Alvin Batiste. He then went on to record as a backup pianist with a host of stellar jazz artists, including David “Fathead” Newman, Charlie Byrd, and many others. Lenny has recorded 20 CD’s as leader to date, performed in several international jazz festivals, three New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festivals, and has had his music featured on radio and TV. . His latest cd, SUN RAY- A Tribute To Ray Bryant, is a homage to his first piano teacher; SUN RAY has recently been among the top jazz albums on the National Jazz Charts for radio airplay in the USA/Canada, reaching #4 on the charts. The trio has been touring this year and performed in the famous Blues Alley in DC. Jun 23 - Mourning & Remembrance: Symbolism & Iconography - 3:00pm - Symbolism & Iconography used in 19th century cemeteries. Part 2 Meet at the entrance to the cemetery on Longwood Avenue (near traffic signal at Oakwood Street). Rain or shine. This will be a walking tour that will focus on the symbolism and Iconography discussed in the Part 1 lecture on May 5. You can come to the tour without having attended the lecture. Learn about the symbolism behind the designs found on tombstones found in this historic cemetery. Wear comfortable shoes! Jun 26 - Jun 28 - Growing Up in World War II Day Camp - 8:30am to 1:00pm - Kids take a trip back in time with this three-day summer day camp where they learn what life was like on the homefront during World War II and as a soldier. The camp is for students in grades 4-6. Limited space is available and camp fees do apply. Jun 29 - Women Can Fly Virginia - 9:00am to 4:00pm - Calling all Women! Interested in becoming a pilot? Come out of June 29th (rain or shine) to Lynchburg Regional Airport and experience the wonderful world of aviation through the eyes of a woman. Enjoy a day full of FREE hands-on activities and chances to hear from female pilots from all over Virginia. Activities include: free flights, free simulator rides (including CRJ200 Jet Simulator), guest speakers from Airlines and Military, ATC Tower visits, static aircraft displays, free ground lessons, food vendors.
