Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker
The Bedford Council of Garden Clubs is pleased to sponsor a Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker to be located at the National Guard Armory in Bedford, Virginia. The Blue Star Memorials were first conceived after World War II to honor veterans. They were later changed to honor all members of the armed services, past, present, and future and became a project of the National Council of State Garden Clubs. The garden club felt the highway beautification project was a fitting Memorial to the men and women who have fought or are now serving in the defense of the country.
The name was taken from the Blue Star in the Service Flag in honor of men and women serving in the armed forces. This is a nationwide program with more than 20 markers already placed in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The dedication was held on Armed Forced Day, Saturday May 20, 2006 at 11:00 a.m..
